On a less than 5% grade, our woeful truck posted a top speed of 49mph. The speed limit here is 75mph and we have yet to hit the toughest part of the journey — the Bitterroot Range just west of Missoula, Montana. Unfortunately, we’ll have to tackle the heavy mountain stage at night. We’re probably looking at 10pm into the range, well after sundown, and a 1am arrival into Spokane, Washinton for the night.
Fil’s at the driver’s seat for the next 200 miles so that I can rest my hands. The toughest physical part of this trip has been my hands, surprisingly. The steering wheel is a bit thin. Add incessant desire for the truck to drift like a sail boat, and I’m giving the wheel a deathgrip. It’s a nice change to be typing.
