This may just be an Asian parent thing, but every time I go to a buffet with my parents, my mother tells me “Don’t eat anything with rice or noodles. Make sure eat all the meat and fish first.” We are always ordered to eat the cost of the buffet in pounds of meat and fish. I nod to appease her and then I bring over a small side of fried rice with my meat. She then looks at me with a little bit of disappointment. I can feel her thinking ‘you’re going to have to eat a sack of that to make this meal worth it.’
Emily and I went to Todai today — it’s a Japanese seafood buffet. We talked about how we should eat for pleasure and not to justify the cost of the buffet. An hour and half later, we were unable to move because we had eaten so much and it hurt. It go to show that you can’t beat your upbringing.
