After hearing that a friend was victimized by non-Internet related identity fraud I decided to arm myself with some machinery. I have had my credit card numbers stolen in the past and with the lack of action by congress in helping identity theft victims I opted for some cheap insurance… a shredder. I researched online and since I know nothing about shredders, I headed to Amazon to read the reviews. Too bad it’s always difficult to get the true picture basedon reviews. On one product, someone claimed it couldn’t shred anything thinker than a folded letter, the next guy couldn’t stop raving about the product. How typical of the Internet… Who can you really trust?
So I put off the purchase until I came across a $25 crosscut shredder, envelope opener and pencil sharpener on one — far cheaper than anything I found online. To my amazement, this thing (a Royal HT3SL) eats entire envelopes, folded credit card mailers and even plastic credit cards! Sure, the going can be a little slow and the opening is smaller than a 1/2 fold, but it is guaranteed fun watching it make confetti out of junk mail.
